Vertical shear over this area, particularly North Carolina, is a bit stronger and more westerly than areas farther north. Farther south across Virginia and into the Carolinas, a cluster of storms developed along a pre-frontal trough this morning across western North Carolina. Even so, some water-loaded downdrafts will likely appear, with the greatest threat around and near the Philadelphia metro area. As a result, according to the SPC, predominantly multicellular storm mode is anticipated, with updraft duration likely limited by the lack of strong shear and storm interactions. Shear is relatively modest across northern portions of the region, with effective bulk shear around 30 to 35 kt. This shortwave is expected to continue east-northeastward throughout the day, interacting with the very moist air mass across the Mid-Atlantic region.
