The temple was not only big, but also beautiful. Jing’an Temple in the 19th century, then located in the western suburbs of Shanghai.Īfter moving to Bubbling Well Creek, the ancient temple gradually expanded and grew to be a gigantic temple in the Yuan Dynasty (12711368). He and other historians are still searching for more sources to prove this.Īccording to the 2013 book, “Traces of Place Names in Jing’an District,” edited by the district’s urban planning and land management bureau, the temple was first named Hudu Chongyuan Temple, renamed Yongtaichan Temple during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and got the present name Jing’an Temple in 1008 during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). today,” said scholar Zhang Sheng from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences who has researched the urban and architectural history around Jing’an Temple.Īfter researching a Songjiang record named Yun Jian Zhi or Record among the Clouds, published in the 1190s, Zhang traced the temple’s history back more than 1,600 years, which made Jing’an Temple the oldest Buddhist temple in the southern region of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. After that the temple was moved to the bank of Bubbling Well Creek, which is the present site of 1686 Nanjing Road W. “The temple formerly perched on the bank of old Wusong River (today’s Suzhou River), which was constantly attacked by river waves, finally crashed in a flood in 1216. Some scholars trace the history of Jing’an Temple back more than 1,600 years, which made it the oldest Buddhist temple in the southern region of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The player can also use a "run and jump" strategy to slow down the Kaernk while in water, although it is always safer to jump on a box or crate. Because of this, it is only safe to move through the water while the Kaernk is chowing down, not before. Note that the player or an object entering the water will always cause the Kaernk to approach it, except while it is eating. If Daniel does not disturb the water after throwing an edible object, the Kaernk will return to where it was after it has finished eating, whereas if a book is thrown the creature will remain where it landed. However, if any meat is thrown into the water, such as severed body parts, the monster will pursue and devour the meat, buying Daniel a short amount of time to move in the water unharmed. However, when it reaches the source of movement in the water, it is able to distinguish an ordinary object from food. It does not differentiate between living beings and objects before starting to pursue them. When hunting, a Kaernk only reacts to movements in the water. Daniel can only see where the monster is by the loud splashing noises, the splashes it makes when moving, and the banging it makes on doors when trying to break them down. However, what it lacks in reach it makes up for with its invisibility. The Kaernk is only capable of attacking things that wander into the shallow pools that it inhabits. The most common death-hint shown after dying to a Kaernk. While the Kaernks in the wells are not by themselves dangerous, falling into a Kaernk-containing well is fatal. If Daniel did not do this at the first well, he would have to do so at the second well located near the Cells. To obtain a sample of Tampter, Daniel lowers a haunch of meat into the well and allows the Kaernk to feast on it. Cells – Two final encounters occur during the quest to recreate Agrippa's Potion, during which Daniel encountered a well-dwelling Kaernk. It seems that the Kaernk is trapped in the rubble from this recent cave-in as it is unable to enter the area and attack him. Once there, he can hear the watery predator growl. Sewer (Aural) – As Daniel explores the Sewer, he may come across a passageway that the Shadow has collapsed completely.Sewer (Visual) – On low sanity, Daniel may also "see" a Kaernk splashing towards him in the sewers but it cannot damage him.If Daniel stayed in the Cistern for too long or completes the Morgue before going there, a Kaernk will appear, even if Daniel doesn't have low sanity, it will attack if it gets the chance. It is a far less dangerous encounter here though, as Daniel can use the many walkways to easily avoid contact with the creature. However, if Daniel has completed the Morgue first, the Kaernk will actually appear in the water once the last valve is turned, along with the Shadow's fleshy residue. If Daniel's sanity was high enough, he will only hear the Kaernk growl and occasionally splash in the water as he turns the valves, but the creature will not actually pursue or attack him, making it seem like a hallucination.

And there is no FDA-approved medicine for kleptomania. There's little scientific research about using psychiatric medicines to treat kleptomania. You may have to try several types of treatment to find what works well for you. However, there's no standard kleptomania treatment, and researchers are still trying to understand what may work best. Treatment for kleptomania typically involves medicines and psychotherapy, or both, sometimes along with self-help groups. Without treatment, kleptomania will likely be an ongoing, long-term condition. Kleptomania is difficult to overcome on your own. This creates a strong habit that becomes hard to break.Īlthough fear, humiliation or embarrassment may make it hard for you to seek treatment for kleptomania, it's important to get help. Responding to these urges by stealing causes a temporary decrease in distress and relief from these urges. An imbalance in this system could make it harder to resist urges. Urges are regulated by the brain's opioid system. Dopamine causes pleasurable feelings, and some people seek this rewarding feeling again and again. Stealing may cause the release of dopamine - another neurotransmitter. Low levels of serotonin are common in people prone to impulsive behaviors. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, helps regulate moods and emotions. Problems with a naturally occurring brain chemical called serotonin.More research is needed to better understand these possible causes, but kleptomania may be linked to: Several theories suggest that changes in the brain may be at the root of kleptomania, and that learned patterns of stealing items strengthens the problem over time. Your provider may refer you to a mental health professional who can help you plan a way of raising your concerns without making your friend or relative feel defensive or threatened. If you need help preparing for this conversation, talk with your health care provider. Treatments are available that may help to minimize the urge to steal and live without addiction and shame. You understand that, with kleptomania, the urge to steal may be too strong to resist just by "putting your mind to it.".You're worried about the risks of compulsive stealing, such as being arrested, losing a job or damaging a valued relationship. You're concerned because you care about the person's health and well-being. It may be helpful to emphasize these points: Keep in mind that kleptomania is a mental health disorder, not a character flaw, so approach the person without judgment or blame. If you suspect a close friend or family member may have kleptomania, gently raise your concerns with that person. Or they've already been arrested, and they're legally required to seek treatment. Some people seek medical help because they're afraid they'll get caught and have legal problems. However, a mental health provider usually doesn't report your thefts to authorities. Many people who may have kleptomania don't want to seek treatment because they're afraid they'll be arrested or jailed. If you can't stop shoplifting or stealing, seek medical advice. Urges to steal may come and go or may occur with greater or lesser intensity over the course of time.Items also may be donated, given away to family or friends, or even secretly returned to the place from which they were stolen. The stolen items are usually stashed away, never to be used.Often, the stolen items have no value to the person with kleptomania, and the person can afford to buy them. Some may steal from friends or acquaintances, such as at a party. Most people with kleptomania steal from public places, such as stores.Episodes of kleptomania generally happen suddenly, without planning and without help from another person. They steal simply because the urge is so powerful that they can't resist it. Unlike most shoplifters, people with kleptomania don't compulsively steal for personal gain, on a dare, for revenge or out of rebellion. People with kleptomania usually have these features or characteristics:

At its best, the show delights in a vital feeling that has, of late, been denied us. Still, it’s not a bad place to visit for a bit, all bright and airy and deliciously open. Outer Banks is too wobbly, too noncommittal about what kind of show it wants to be: generic teen melodrama or thriller with a keen sense of place? Deliberately hokey or deeply sincere? Burke and the brothers Pate struggle to answer those questions, leaving the show to languish in limbo-beached on a sandbar of its own making, stuck out in the very shallows where it should be cavorting. So many dumb mistakes are made in each episode, usually leading to some moment of violence that should be harrowing, scarring, transformative for John B and crew, but are instead merely brushed off or laughed away a scene later. But more often than not, Outer Banks is bogged down by weak, shout-y performances and writing that invites more genuine frustration than affable, “get a load of these idiots” chuckles. It gets there, at times, when its silliness mingles well with the propulsive sweep of its world-building. If only the show was as fun as that premise suggests. There are glimmers, here and there, suggesting that Outer Banks has a broader politics on its mind in this depiction of vassal and liege, but the show is more concerned with having a good time frothing around in the soap than it is in Saying Something. That monied caste is called the Kooks, for some reason, and are largely identifiable by their traditionally preppy clothing-bright polos, crisp shorts-as opposed to the Pogues’ artful scraggle. There’s a class struggle framing this whole narrative, as John B and JJ and Pope (but not Kiara, technically) are “Pogues,” meaning they’re children of the poor local families who service all the wealthy seasonal residents. Outer Banks is determined to not have its mellow harshed too much. Once the suspense part of the story kicks into gear, you’d think the kids would have less time to lounge around looking perfectly mussed. Life is all mild hustle and easy flow for these relatively carefree kids-they screw around on their boat, they drink beers on the beach, they seemingly never wash their hair-until a hurricane comes and dredges up past secrets. ) some nine months prior to the pilot episode, but he’s got good company in his pals: dopey-dangerous JJ ( Rudy Pankow), nerdy-quirky Pope ( Jonathan Daviss), and the resident girl, a politically minded toughie named Kiara ( Madison Bailey). John B has basically lived alone since his dad was lost at sea (hmm. Outer Banks is a show that is, in theory, as much as about its moody setting as it is about its characters, like Netflix’s Bloodline before it, a humid thriller that made menacing poetry of the mangrove tangles of the Florida Keys. Television teens have returned to those troubled shores for the usual canoodling and angst-but also, this time, in pursuit of a mystery’s answer, dodging bullets fired by menacing thugs invading a tucked-away Eden to extract its hidden riches. Which brings me to the new Netflix series Outer Banks (dropping April 15), which takes place on the Outer Banks islands of North Carolina, but was filmed in South Carolina. This landscape was home to emotional swell and gauzy romance beautiful, but lacking a danger that might make these places seem truly mythic. As that happened, the coastal south was partly taken over by the Nicholas Sparks cinematic universe, in which a legion of lovers, mostly young, had their dramas unfold in those picturesque expanses, all warm and golden and dripping with sticky-sweet honey. While North Carolina boomed for a while, over time, TV and film productions followed tax breaks to the shorelines of South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana. (The cliffside road scenes were shot in California, but still.) The teen tone of North Carolina was quite different in 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer (which shared the same writer as Dawson’s), but it had the same pleasing allure: recognizably of our country, but still somehow exotic. Though the show took place on Cape Cod, it was filmed in and around Wilmington, North Carolina, capturing a kind of glowing Americana-not too north, but not too south, and lush with marsh and water. A staggering 22 years ago, the teen drama series Dawson’s Creek introduced many young Americans to the sun-dappled shores of the Carolinas. Data: (a) GHCN-Daily from 20 long-term stations (b) nClimDiv (c) GHCN-Daily from 12 long-term stations. Sources: (a, b, c) CISESS and NOAA NCEI (d) NOAA Hurricane Research Division. Hurricanes reach the North Carolina coast with hurricane-force winds about once every 3 years. A typical reporting station experiences a 3-inch precipitation event about once every 1 to 2 years. Annual precipitation and the number of 3-inch extreme precipitation events show variability but were well above average during the 2015–2020 period. The number of very hot days has declined compared to mid-20th century levels, which coincided with periods of exceptionally dry weather. In Figure 3d, bars show totals over 5-year periods (last bar is a 6-year total). In Figures 3a, 3b, and 3c, dots show annual values, bars show averages over 5-year periods (last bar is a 6-year average), and the horizontal black lines show the long-term (entire period) averages: (a) 11 days, (b) 49.6 inches, (c) 0.7 days. Although North Carolina has not experienced an increase in the frequency of very hot days (Figure 3a), the last 11 years (2010–2020) have seen the largest number of very warm nights (Figure 4).įigure 3: Observed (a) annual number of very hot days (maximum temperature of 95☏ or higher), (b) total annual precipitation, (c) annual number of 3-inch extreme precipitation events (days with precipitation of 3 inches or more), and (d) total number of hurricane events (wind speeds reaching hurricane strength somewhere in the state) for North Carolina from (a, c, d) 1900 to 2020 and (b) 1895 to 2020. Summer average temperatures have been the warmest on record for the last 16 years (2005–2020 Figure 2b). Winter average temperatures have generally been above average since 1990, with the 2015–2020 period exceeding the levels of the early 1930s and early 1950s (Figure 2a). Since that time, temperatures have increased steadily and have consistently been above average since the late 1990s. Temperatures were highest during the first half of the 20th century, followed by a cool period in the 1960s and 1970s. North Carolina is part of a larger region of the southeastern United States that exhibited little overall warming in surface temperatures over the 20th century. Temperatures in North Carolina have risen more than 1☏ since the beginning of the 20th century (Figure 1). Less warming is expected under a lower emissions future (the coldest end-of-century projections being about as warm as the hottest year in the historical record green shading) and more warming under a higher emissions future (the hottest end-of-century projections being about 10☏ warmer than the hottest year in the historical record red shading). Historically unprecedented warming is projected during this century. Observed temperatures are generally within the envelope of model simulations of the historical period (gray shading). Shading indicates the range of annual temperatures from the set of models. Temperatures in North Carolina (orange line) have risen more than 1☏ since the beginning of the 20th century. Projected changes for 2006–2100 are from global climate models for two possible futures: one in which greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase (higher emissions) and another in which greenhouse gas emissions increase at a slower rate (lower emissions). We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands. Service bulletin content varies in severity - you'll find TSBs that cover hard-to-start engines and clunking transmissions alongside those that offer remedies for inoperable cigarette lighters and slight paint imperfections. Owner notifications have mileage and time restrictions - these may extend beyond the warranty period. We were instructed to make an appointment at a Honda dealership and to allow half a day for the free repairs. The letter listed two potential problems: (1) difficulty starting the Insight in very cold weather (0° F) due to a faulty engine control module and (2) AM radio static due to an improperly grounded rear wiper motor. For example, our staff received such a letter in regard to our long-term Honda Insight. If a problem addressed in a TSB is particularly widespread, the manufacturer may decide to send out "Owner Notification" letters - in this case, the manufacturer has a good idea of which vehicles (by VIN) will experience the problem. TSBs frequently (but not always) address a recurring problem and include illustrated instructions for repair, a list of the parts needed, the warranty status and the labor charge. These bulletins differ from recalls in that they are not considered safety or emissions issues and they usually apply only when your vehicle is in its warranty period (whereas a recall is "open" until the work has been performed). "Most TSBs are released during the first year that a vehicle is offered or the year following a redesign," our road test editor, Neil Chirico (a former service advisor for Ford, Lincoln-Mercury and Volvo), observed - in order to address areas that might have been overlooked when designing the car. Though an apparent nugget of good hope for consumers, a technical service bulletin is actually an advisory issued by a manufacturer for use by dealership service departments. (no more of the 'we can't create it, so you must be imagining it' crap)." - frank12, CarSpace TSB Forum Does anybody here have access to the actual write-ups on these TSBs? I would like to be able to go to the dealership with the TSB write-ups in hand so they can see exactly what the problem is and fix it. How can you be certain that you've matched a TSB correctly to your vehicle's symptoms? And how will this confusing bit of information ever be good enough to convince your service advisor to make a repair? But your irritation returns when you see that your search has yielded only titles, numbers and a barely intelligible description of the problem.
